Fantasia suelta, partially imitative. Short: 78 compases, moving from beginning to end without pause. Symmetrical design.
Interesting features: (1) abrupt harmonic turn at 43-44. (2) Developmental approach to thematic writing and counterpoint. (3) “Drone” texture – pedal.
I 1-39; II 39-78, - exactly half.
I – begins imitatively theme 1; then freer with theme 2, then cadential theme 3 over pedal C. >> 25-39 is a development of the theme 1 material.
II – begins with tighter motivic imitation of 4, then at 54 begins contrasting free homophony with sequence of 5 at 70 giving sense of culmination.
