Parody of an unknown model. The extent of borrowing is unknown, but it appears that the introduction with voice pairing style might be borrowed. Mode 8 range, but cadences of 7. N.B last cadence “Laudini” cadence – anachronistic (Valderrábano uses it also in Fantasia 9).
This fantasia sees Valderrábano in a better humour, more reminiscent of the dash of his song “Argimina”. Work begins with voice pairs, and develops into a breathless tyrade of cascading and rocketing motives racing through a transparent texture. The characteristic of these (themes 2, 3, 4) is their identical rhythm, one also favoured by Francesco da Milano.
The work has more charm and is more successful than several of Valderrabano’s others.
Breathlessness is caused through the avoidance of cadence, that is taken “in-motion”.
Most notable is the playability of the work. It falls under the hand with ease, and is a sure case for an improvised piece done with instrument in hand. Good work to discuss.
The opening gesture of this piece is identical to the opening of the unidentified Agnus Dei intabulation va006.
