Commentary

Monothematic cantus firmus style. One of Pisador’s better monothematic works. Opening T/B – S/A duos are very nice – theme in long notes in upper part with free lower part. 1st time theme starts on C, 2nd time on F. Free part is identical in both duos. Then the texture reverts to his normal cantus firmus style. Voices all take theme; in original position and transposed to Bb. The usual voice irregularities occur, but the sense of phrase is quite coherent, and cadential divisions are much better than many others. Texture allows voicing and C.F. to be heard. There is still not much tonal variety, but much more than in Pisador 38 for example. Cadences on C, F, d, Bb. Quite good really. There is however still not much beauty or direction in the handling of non-thematic voices. Don’t be so harsh. However, quite a good example of his better works in this style.

Theme has inbuilt cadence in last 3 tones.
Two transpositions near end up atone to sol fa mi sol la sol.
Designated in syllables beneath tablature – extraordinary.
Bars 23-26 – Imitative treatment of theme. Texture made denser to a cadence, then reduced straight after to a duo. – Example of good control over texture and drama.
