Summary

The focus, intent, and purposes of the project are first, to develop appropriate programs designed to transfer tablature to the Ford-Columbia music representation, and second to encode in Ford-Columbia representation by this process a representative body of material. The article describes the development of the procedures, including a relatively simple input language. The tablature used for the development of the process was that of Antonio de Cabezon, the 16th-c. Spanish composer. The availability of musical material prepared in this manner offers several possibilities, including: 1) printout in score using the PHOTON or similar process, 2) analysis of the music from any of several standpoints through the use of appropriate computerized techniques and programs (because the Ford-Columbia representation is in essence the complete musical score), 3) comparison of large numbers of musical facets (incipits, glosses, embellishments), including indexing of thematic material, and 4) establishment of bases for the development of additional programs that can provide means to transcribe other tablabures (keyboard, lute, vihuela).
